NewGate, Connected hearts . . . learning apart!

Our Education Plan in the midst of COVID-19

Keeping our students, families, and staff healthy and safe is paramount at Newgate School. We have been following guidelines set forth by the Department of Education, Department of Children and Families, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Florida Department of Health – as well as emergency orders, mandates, and advisories from the state and federal governments. With a constantly changing landscape, we have tried to communicate important information and action steps in a timely manner with the hopes of answering your questions.

Online Learning supports Stay-At-Home. On Saturday, April 18, Governor DeSantis announced that all K-12 school buildings will be closed for the remainder of the school year. He further stated that although “online schooling is not ideal it is the best option right now.”

We are happy that we were one of the first schools to mobilize and open our doors to online learning for our students. Most importantly, every program is providing students and families opportunities to stay connected to their classroom community.

NewGate School will continue to offer online learning opportunities for all children 18 months to 18 years old through May 29.

Love our school. Love our children. Be Safe. Stay Home.

Postponing Open Houses

For the health and safety of our staff, we will not be offering in-person Open Houses until further notice. However, if you

know of any families who would like a virtual school tour, please have them call Tanya at 269-449-3396 or email at

NewGate School FAQs

When and how can I reach my child’s teacher? Email remains the best way to contact a teacher. If you wish to speak to a teacher, please use email to set up a time for a phone call.

When can I expect a response? In most cases, you can expect a response to emails within 24 hours.

How much communication can I expect from the school? The administration office will communicate with you directly should there be any updates on the Covid-19 situation that might have a direct impact on school operations. The frequency of communication from your child’s teacher will vary depending on each program.

Can teachers tutor students individually online? Teachers will be connecting with families on a ‘class level’, and also sharing suggestions, feedback, and expectations on an individualized or small group level where necessary. Video conferencing will be utilized for our students.

How much technology will be used? This will vary greatly depending on the age of the students. Teachers will share information with families via email. A variety of technologies will be used: Google Classroom, Google Docs, Google Hangouts, Zoom, and Seesaw to engage student learning and to submit work assignments.

I don’t have access to a printer. What should I do? NewGate is happy to provide printing assistance. Please forward any school work for printing to with the subject line: PRINT REQUEST – CHILD’S FULL NAME. All printing tasks will be completed by the following workday. You will be given instructions as to how to pick-up printed documents.

What is the procedure for students and parents visiting on-site? If your child is invited to the NewGate campus, teachers will share specific details about where to enter, where to wait and what hygiene procedures to follow.

How will the school keep me informed on the closure? We currently expect to re-open on April 16. The Governor has indicated that they will review the school schedule on April 15. Any changes to this plan will be communicated via our school website and email.

Can NewGate students have any access to the school campus during the closure? Access will be very limited but possible in certain circumstances. The purpose of the closure is to minimize the risk of infection caused by large groups of people gathering together. In line with other instructions from Sarasota County schools, we will be identifying certain opportunities for students to be on campus individually or in very small groups for specific purposes e.g. picking up notebooks or content-oriented books.

The maximum number of students that can be present in any indoor space at one time during the closure will be 2, and a rigorous hygiene routine must be followed. Open-air gatherings (e.g. NewGate garden or elsewhere) are permitted at the teacher’s discretion with a group size of no more than 6 students.

Any access to the NewGate campus will be arranged via online sign-up. “Drop-in” visits are not permitted. All visits are optional at the parent’s discretion, and nobody will be required to be on campus at any time during the closure. If any opportunities arise for your child to visit the school campus, your classroom teachers will be in touch to share specific details.

Will we get a reimbursement of tuition? NewGate is operating in accordance with local government instructions given these exceptional circumstances of a nationwide, government-initiated school closure. As such, there will be no reimbursement of tuition offered. Teachers continue to work both on-site and remotely to support families and offer the best education services we can under these challenging conditions.

What support will be provided to children whose parents both work full-time? It would be unrealistic and counter-productive in the situation for NewGate to provide child-care for all working families. We understand that this sudden change to physical distancing and self-isolating is an inconvenience for everyone. If any NewGate family finds themselves in an emergency situation or in truly exceptional circumstances, please feel free to contact us.
